In her video work Dandelion we see Adriana Czernin standing in a meadow. Taking deliberate steps, she is trying to crush the yellow dandelion flowers underfoot. This action makes it possible to experience the depth of space of the originally flat and two-dimensional meadow, the edges of the picture are its chosen boundaries. What is only hinted at in Czernin’s drawings becomes a significant element in the film: her humorous treatment of the theme and one’s own seriousness.
The overlaying of social and psychological processes and the preoccupation with traditional female patterns of behaviour are central aspects of the work of Adriana Czernin. The artist continually combines a seriousness of treatment with a twinkle of the eye in order to convert the oppressive action into something paradoxically absurd.
Adriana Czernin is showing videos and large format drawings in her second solo show at the Galerie Martin Janda. Her intensive work with the moving image has further developed her treatment of the two- and three-dimensional in her new drawings.
In search of a certain quality of the ornamental, aesthetic strategies of computer games are picked up and inserted in the composition as an element to create as well as to transfigure space.
